Call Hannaford to demand Milk with Dignity before Migrant Justice returns to the Netherlands

In just one week, Migrant Justice will return to the Netherlands, home of Hannaford Supermarket’s parent company, to directly address corporate executives and directors. We will enter the annual shareholder meeting to share the stories of dairy workers enduring abuses on farms supplying milk to Hannaford Supermarket, to denounce Hannaford’s false solutions, and to urge the company to take action now by joining the worker-driven human rights program Milk with Dignity.

Add your voice today! Take a minute to call Hannaford President Mike Vail and demand Milk with Dignity!

At last year’s shareholder meeting, Hannaford’s parent company Ahold Delhaize conceded to years of farmworker demands by commissioning an independent “Human Rights Impact Assessment” of its Northeast US dairy supply chain. In the fall, investigators came to the U.S. to speak with farmworkers and other industry stakeholders. They heard from worker after worker about the systemic human rights violations in Hannaford’s dairy supply chain. They also heard a clear message that the solution to addressing these abuses is the Milk with Dignity Program.

Since the Human Rights Impact Assessment (HRIA) concluded, the company appears poised to bury the report. In its recent annual report, Ahold writes:

After finalizing the HRIAs, we align with internal Group- and brand-level stakeholders and business partners to define next steps based on our findings and recommendations. This first wave of HRIAs confirmed the importance of confidentiality and trust in conducting a meaningful dialogue.

Once you get past the corporate-speak, what this statement amounts to is a signal that the report will be kept confidential. No farmworker who participated in the assessment has received word of its findings; apparently, farmworkers don’t rank among Hannaford’s “business partners” and aren’t worth including in a “meaningful dialogue.”

We won’t be taking no for an answer. Farmworkers demand that Hannaford and Ahold publish the report and share its findings. Workers and consumers demand transparency!

Make your call to Hannaford today, then join with thousands of others to pledge your solidarity with farmworkers fighting for human rights!

p.s. Mayday, International Workers' Day, is right around the corner. Save the date and prepare to join Migrant Justice in a full-day picket of Hannaford Supermarket in Williston, VT!
