Migrant Justice is headed back to the Netherlands!

In a few short weeks, Migrant Justice will return to the Netherlands – home of Hannaford Supermarket’s parent company – to bring the demand for Milk with Dignity to their doorstep. Multinational grocery giant Ahold Delhaize will hold its Annual General Meeting of company shareholders, and Migrant Justice will be in the room to call on the corporation to take accountability for the human rights violations in Hannaford’s dairy supply chain.

To build momentum for the transatlantic trip, Milk with Dignity supporters will be calling Hannaford all day next Thursday, March 27th. Hundreds of callers will flood Hannaford’s phone lines to show their solidarity with farmworkers and demand action.

Can you volunteer to drive calls to Hannaford on 3/27? Sign up for a shift for next Thursday (and a training beforehand if it’s your first time)!

Last spring, Migrant Justice traveled to the headquarters of Ahold Delhaize in the Netherlands to speak with company executives about the refusal of their U.S.-based subsidiary Hannaford Supermarket to address abuses in its dairy supply. While Ahold seeks to project an image of concern for human rights, the workers milking the cows to produce Hannaford-brand milk labor long hours for less than minimum wage, live in squalid housing, suffer serious injuries without protection, and are subject to harassment, discrimination, and violence.

During last year’s visit, we built relationships with unions, legal experts, migrant rights organizations, and civil society groups. We joined with others in a protest outside Ahold’s Annual General Meeting of shareholders (see the above photo). And we laid the groundwork for sustained, transnational solidarity with the immigrant farmworkers leading the campaign for Milk with Dignity.

This April, we will return to Europe. Allied shareholders will provide Migrant Justice with proxy votes to enter the Annual General Meeting and speak directly to the Ahold Board of Directors and top executives. As the company celebrates over $100 billion in global sales, we will remind them that their profits would not be possible without the farmworkers who produce the food sold on their shelves.

And back in the U.S., you can continue to show your solidarity by signing the Hannaford consumer pledge. Let Hannaford know that you stand with farmworkers by committing to never cross a picket line at a Hannaford and to respect a storewide boycott if workers call for one in the future.

Sign the Hannaford consumer pledge today! And if you’ve already signed, share the pledge with friends and family.
